Description
Wind and Rain for erhu and piano is my first piece experimenting with fusion a western instrument and a Chinese instrument. The title is drawn from a poem Wind and Rain written by Li Shangyin in late Tang Dynasty.
There are three sections in the piece and each one corresponds to the meaning of different lines in the poem. The first and last section describe “wind and rain shake yellow leaves from the wood,” “blue mansions overflow with fluting and twanging sound,” as well as “how much wine he’d drink to appease his heart.” The middle section depicts “someone wander lonely,” “old friends have long been drifted apart” as well as “the heartless social life” and the section shows substantial contrasts in terms of musical gesture and density.
