Description
The original theme is derived from a Chinese folk song “Qindao.” In the piece each variation shows different textures, gestures, moods and characters. In the first variation, the music is more vivid and spirit in character while the accompanying figures are decorated with diatonic cluster. In the second variation, the music becomes recitative-like while the violin shows numerous cadenza-like colorful passages rising from bottom to high register. In the third variation, the melody becomes more singing-like and resembles Chinese instrument “erhu.” In the fourth variations, the violin texture is more arpeggio-like while blending with the piano’s fast running melodic passages. In the fifth variation, the music becomes even more melodious, passionate, lyrical and expressive. In the sixth variation, the music becomes totally distinct in terms of harmonic language and it becomes modal, yet the music is nocturne-like. In the seventh variation, both instruments show conflicts with each other and they are full of energetic motions. In the last variation, the brilliant piano passages are in canon with the violin part and pitches’ permutations are taken place. The main theme returns at the end while the folk tone is decorated with artificial harmonics. .
